Finding our William B. Cox
Genealogy: Where
you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
Last update: 16 January
2017
Over the past 300+ years their have been many William Cox’s so Please bear with me,
Fortunately some have included a middle initial when signing their name.
There are at least two family lines from SC through GA and into MS with William B. Cox’s.
After lots (and lots) of dead ends, locations, dates and sibling names that did not agree; research on this grandparents name backward and forward, up and down, in and out of these states, this is part of what I have so far.
This includes information found by Shad Cox of New Mexico, Kenneth R. Cox of Texas; Duncan Rountree (deceased) of Texas, lots of leads from others researching this family and the wonderful folks that spent so much time transcribing, scanning and posting documents on the internet. Before the internet my research went very slow ordering microfilm to view at the library.

A fun read: http://www.moonzstuff.com/cox/john1739.html
--
A good study on our cousin (?) that came to Texas early: http://soulwinners.biz/Cox.htm
We align with the Forth Generation noted in the book except that had he been a “Loyalist” as described I do not believe he would have retained any property to give to his heirs.
History I have read on the area indicates that any “Loyalists” that did not run to Canada or back to England were generally hung.
In other records that I located, a town meeting in which the residents were asked to take the “Oath of Allegiance” to the revolution, most signed, a few refused and several were excused for religious reasons. If this is a Quaker family I do not believe they are allowed to take an oath to anyone but God.

Do not have a clue if these are our direct relatives, but they are close.

Some info found from Jerry Tonroy Columbia SC tonroyj@hotmail.com
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cox/messages/7199.html
Seeking information / fellow trackers of the family of John
Cox of Pendleton District SC
who died in 1816 -- SC State Archives Microfilm Roll C0148 -- will dated 18 Aug
1815 and proven 9 Aug 1816.
His will indicates he owned a mill and plantation at the mouth of Big
Generostee Creek into the Savannah River -- two miles south of present day US
29 bridge and Hartwell Dam -- about 15m of SW of Anderson SC. Early Elbert
County Georgia deeds indicate that a John Cox of Pendleton Dist. SC bought two
islands in Savannah River across from mouth of Genostee Creek about 1805 --
these should be the "Irelands" mentioned in the will (aside -- these
could have been a good place for duels). Creek is
named Jenorostee in will. Coxes Mills appears at this location in Robert Mills
1825 Atlas of South Carolina -- the survey/ map of Pendleton District by
Stribling was done by 1818.

This appears to be a well researched line for Ned [Edward] Cox
It shows Elizabeth getting married to Jonathan Skelton in Elbert Co Georgia 7 July 1810
This is the same county that the Allen Family lives in 1830
This shows Edward living in Alabama in 1835
From their page:
The Cox-Bentley Researchers here in Upshur County,
Texas are inclined to believe that our Cox's started in
Virginia, moved to South Carolina, then moved to
Alabama, and finally to East Texas. I will start
with JOHN COX who left a will proven on
9 Aug 1816, Pendleton District,
John married SARAH SMITH about 1782,
Carolina

William Cox (John) born in 1783 in? Died 1821 in Pendleton Dist SC
Children William Bolen Cox and John Wesley Cox are named in the will to receive the land. They are under age so the will is objected to by George (their uncle?) wife. Wife Mary is provided for in the will and other heirs are mentioned.
The will is not probated until 1828 (most likely waiting for sons to be of age).
More details can be seen in a transcript with additional papers that were with the will
